INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Tanzania s economy is growing at the rate of 4.7% and the power of modern technology is immense The rapid growth of IT sector in the country contributes to increased generation of e-waste which has altered the environment in ways that were unimaginable only a few decades ago. E-waste accounts for 0.5% of the total municipal solid waste generated in the country. Notably, Percentage of households having a mobile phone increased from 57% in 2011/12 to 82.6 percent in 2017/18. Household Budget Survey Report, 2020). Tanzania is a consumer and a destination of global flows of used EEE which became obsolete in a very short period of time and contribute to the rapid growth of e-waste stream. 2

Policy and Regulatory Framework Policy and Regulatory Framework The National Environmental Policy 2021 - coordinated, holistic and adaptive approach taking into consideration the prevailing and emerging environmental challenges including e-waste Control and Management of Electrical and Electronic Equipment waste) Regulations, 2021 are in place and operational The Regulations provides for licensing and permitting of e-waste dealers in the country. The existing dealers include producers, importers, collectors, recyclers and storage Draft Extended Producer Responsibilities (EPR) guideline are in approval process 3

Initiatives undertaken by the Government Initiatives undertaken by the Government Stakeholders involvement in e-waste management Higher Education institutions have included e-waste management in their curriculums (UDSM, UDOM, DIT). Enforcement and compliance of existing regulations 30 e waste collectors 3 e waste facility (Chilambo General Trade, New Tabosh & Fuqiang Companies) 4

  5. CHALLENGES Low number of e waste dealers compared to the waste load More awareness of e waste is needed Inadequate infrastructures for e-waste management (sorting to disposal) 5

  6. FUTURE OUTLOOK FUTURE OUTLOOK Tanzania remains committed to the objectives outlined in the EACO E- Waste Regional Strategy. Continued collaboration with other EAC member states and stakeholders is essential to achieve meaningful progress in e-waste management 6
