  2. Nabati Poetry The Art of Story Telling Nabati poetry has been a feature of life in Arabia since the 16th century. This poetry is a type of story telling an important part of Arab and Emirati culture. In some areas it was the only record of historical events.

  3. Nabati poetry has a clear and direct style uncomplicated. This poetry has been passed down through generations from Beduouins to the present day - it was rarely written down but passed by spoken word.

  4. There are some themes that are very important in Nabati poetry. Use a dictionary to find their definitions; Chivalry Proverbs Pride Narrative Eulogy Riddles Wisdom

  5. Sheikh Mohammed started writing nabati poetry while he was still at school. When Sheikh Mohammed first started to send his poems to be published in newspapers, he used a false name. He did this because he wanted to see if people genuinely thought his poetry was good. Today, however, he is recognized as one of the best nabati poets. His poetry shows a sensitive side to his personality which he cannot always show in public.

  6. All my poems are a result of personal experience, event or situation. I have never written any verse without it being a reality of my life.

  7. Read the following nabati poem written by Sheikh Mohammed. It is about the late Sheikh Zayed who was president of the UAE. The original poem is quite long so here is just a short excerpt. Discuss each section as you read it.

When every form of poetry failed to portray you, I tried to search for flaws within you. Oh how weary we become, trying to keep up with your steps, You guide, encourage and strengthen us all.

  9. Poverty is alarming to one as generous as you, Oh you who, like rainfall never ceases to give. You are unaware of the endless gifts you offer, You give, yet no reward in return you expect. Your wish is to share welfare among your people, For that, to you, they are eternally grateful.

  10. You have risen to the greatest heights, News of you has spread everywhere. Great loyalty and goodness you scatter on earth, An arid land, made fertile with your earth bounty. All the Arabs, Sheikhs and great Kings, Would be honoured to be just a little like you.

  11. Key Stage 2 Optional Extension Think of a famous person you admire and like. Have a go at writing a nabati style poem about them follow the format from the example (two lines for each section). Remember that this style of poetry is like a story or eulogy.
