  1. We are an operational program grounded in service AMS Ed Program 30th Birthday and Fall 2020 is the 50th consecutive semester of DataStreme!! Distinguish Yourself in Earth Science Teaching: The New Certified AMS Teacher (CAT) Program

  2. Mission Foster scientific literacy in Earth system science with focus on the leveraging current data as a learning tool Directly Supports AMS Strategic Goals: Community Service Centennial Initiative To build knowledge of the atmospheric and related sciences among varied audiences. One of the 5 activities is identifying more volunteer engagement in the Education program To cultivate a talented, diverse, and enthusiastic workforce in the professions served by the AMS.

  3. Were a K-13 Program Two Primary Program Goals: 1) Offering Professional Development Courses for Teachers We offer five courses that serve as foundation for New Certified AMS Teacher program (CAT) Offered tuition-free via MOU with Cal U 3 tuition-free graduate credits per course (but there are fees) 2) Creating and supporting Faculty to adopt complete Curriculum Packages for 3 Undergraduate Courses: Weather Studies Ocean Studies Climate Studies https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/education- careers/education-program/k-12-teachers/

  4. Competitive Grant-funded Summer Courses

  5. Offered online every spring and fall semester Teachers share information with peers and community & implement in classrooms Mentor teams support teacher learning DataStreme course fees are < $500/course and include a mentor team and all course supplies including e-books AMS develops & delivers materials with Cal U

  6. More about CAT-Certified AMS Teacher ametsoc.org/CAT Directly Supports AMS Strategic Goals: To build knowledge of the atmospheric and related sciences among varied audiences. To cultivate a talented, diverse, and enthusiastic workforce in the professions served by the AMS. "I have been involved with AMS s Education Program since the summer of 1994 when I attended the inaugural Maury Project (now Project Ocean) workshop. All of my interactions have added to my pedagogical toolbox over the years. When the CAT program was announced, I immediately started the certification process because of the prestige associated with AMS!" Terri Hathaway, Marine Education Specialist, North Carolina Sea Grant, Raleigh, NC

  7. CAT Program Benefits 1. Identify and recognize teachers with weather/climate/ocean knowledge 2. Raise the visibility of the AMS among teachers, their students, and the public 3. Promote more teachers taking existing AMS teacher Professional Development courses, thus increasing their science literacy 4. Help identify new potential mentor/leader for AMS DataStreme courses 5. Raise visibility of earth science education as an exciting career option for students The biggest benefit to the program is the learning process. CAT Teachers must meet certain requirements, during this process, we enhance our knowledge of Atmospheric, Ocean and Climate topics . CAT Teacher

  8. The Process - Complete 2 AMS Education Program Courses (graduate-level classes in weather, ocean and climate science), then apply! AMS Board on Pre-College Education is responsible for evaluating applications Candidates who have completed their last two courses < 5 years are only required to complete an application. Candidates who have completed their last two courses >5 years ago must also include a recent lesson plan (demonstrating their application of atmospheric or related science content) Candidates with a degree in atmospheric or related science are not required to complete AMS courses, but must include a transcript reflecting degree completion and a recent lesson plan Application is free to members, but there are costs if not a member (see website) Professional development is a requirement to maintain CAT certification - - - - - -

  10. Teacher Benefits - AMS credibility and recognition as an authoritative voice in weather, climate, and ocean science (many are familiar via their local broadcast meteorologist credentials seen on TV) - Adds a desirable micro-credential to an ever-increasing demand to maintain certification as an educator - Opportunities for teachers to engage in AMS activities. - Gain closer connections to science professionals in their communities (local broadcast meteorologists and opportunities to be on air, to be involved in local research, engage with private sector, the NWS, etc.)

  12. Undergraduate Curriculum and DataStreme Resources New Edition in 2018 Revised version available Fall 2021 7th Ed. JUST released Adoption of our curriculum packages helps support AMS Education program activities and the AMS

  13. Our Impact: 22,000+ teachers directly participated in our courses, they have peer-trained >200,000 additional teachers, impacting millions of students -a real testament to AMS member values and goal success! AMS undergraduate courses in weather, ocean, and climate have activated more than 900 institutional licenses, half of which are from minority-serving institutions -186 active licenses (31 May 2020)
