WHAT IS A FRIENDLY LETTER? In the present times, instant messaging, video chatting and texting have become the most common ways of communicating with our friends, relatives and family. But writing a personal letter is always special. Writing a friendly letter to your dear ones is always very thoughtful. It is a great way of sharing your thoughts and experiences with the people whom are special to you. Because of the technology and mobile phones, we have forgotten the charm of writing letters to our loved ones
NOTES: INFORMAL LETTER/FRIENDLY LETTER. An informal letter is a letter that you write to a friend or a family member. It should be 150 words Use informal language e.g. short forms; couldn t, shouldn t. No punctuation marks when writing address or date. The second paragraph must capture all the details as asked in the questions. Add linking words or connectives. Purpose - Communication between two people who are usually familiar to each other - Topic on a personal level (introduction, personal report, invitation, etc.)
LAYOUT OF FRIENDLY/ INFORMAL LETTER

Acknowledge any received letters) Paragraph 2: Development (Use the prompts to develop your letter. The purpose of writing is mentioned here) Paragraph 3: Conclusion (Ending your letter by either passing regards or being grateful) Closing tag Name (First name e.g Nakeesha)
a. Address - Always remember to start the address on the right side - has to be youraddress (address of the addressee in not needed) - Name of the district followed by the name of the island and (country) - (eg) Ile Perseverance 1 Mahe Seychelles b. Date - always necessary - quite free format, e.g. 24 October 2011 (CORRECT) 24th October (Incorrect) Monday, 24 October ( Incorrect avoid using commas)
c. Salutation: - Always start with Dear ,Hi, Hello -Be sure that you know the ways of starting a letter to different people. To a friend: Dear+ First name e.g. Dear Mary. To a brother/sister: Dear + First name To your mother/father: Dear Mum/Dad To your parents: Dear Mum and Dad. To a cousin: Dear+ First name To an aunt: Dear auntie+ first name e.g. Dear Auntie Annie. To an uncle: Dear uncle+ first name e.g. Dear Uncle James
d. Body - Has to be divided into paragraphs - Format of paragraphs: first line of each paragraph is indented oran empty line between paragraphs without indention.
1st paragraph (Introduction) States the purpose of writing. Acknowledge received letters. Should be short. Do not write (How are you?) Prepares the reader for the main part (body) of the letters. You can use short forms like I m , don t , etc. Exclamation marks are also possible to give emphasise Ask questions to motivate an answer
Starting examples: Thanks for your letter/ I ve just received your letter and I m writing at once because . I m sorry I haven t written for a while but I ve been very busy. Sorry for not writing so long. It was great to hear from you again. Thank you very much for answering my last letter so quickly. Thank you for replying so quickly to my last letter. It was a pleasant surprise to receive a letter from you. I am glad to hear from you after a while.
Starting examples: I hope you are I am sorry I haven t written for ages, I have been busy studying for my assessment and I haven t had the time I am sorry I haven t written since your birthday party I have been meaning to write since the party but thing kept cropping up and I am afraid I haven t had the time. It was lovely to receive your letter yesterday. It was great to hear from you last week. You are most welcomed letter arrived this morning. Congratulations on passing the exam! I hope you are feeling better/ I hope you have got over the flu.
2nd paragraph: Body of the letter. The main part of the letter. Use the given prompts to write the letter. Possible beginnings for the second paragraph. Anyway, I thought I would drop you a few lines to I thought you might like to know something about I thought I would drop you a few lines to let you know I m really happy Just a quickie to let you know
Example Write a letter to your friends telling him or her about the trip you had during your holiday The prompts will include; When and where did you go? Who accompanied you? How did you go and what did you see? What did you buy? What did you enjoy the most? Why would you recommend the visit to a friend?
3rd paragraph phrases I am looking forward to seeing you. I can t wait to see you soon. I can t wait to hear from you. I am looking forward to hearing from you. See you soon. Send my love to I hope you are doing vigorous exercise, we need fitness remember? Give my regards to I will await your response. I ve no more news at the moment. I hope to have a letter from you soon. Write me and let me know how you are getting on. Well, that s all for now. I must end now but I ll write a longer letter next time.
