Key Facts Southampton is one of 10 sites across England to take part in the Targeted Lung Health Check programme. The aim is to conduct a free MOT test on people s lung. Smokers and former smokers aged from 55 to 74 and who are registered with a Southampton City GP will be invited to have a lung health check. Lung health checks are a really important test of the overall health of your lungs. The checks are designed to spot any signs of lung problems, such as COPD or even lung cancer, sooner. Lung health checks will be run by specially trained nurses in mobile vans around the city. The Lung Health Checks will be taking place from March 2020 until the end of October 2022 and will be located in sites across Southampton. It is anticipated that there are 22,887 people in Southampton who are eligible to take part in the programme. If you aren t eligible for a lung health check, it is still really important to look after your lungs by being active, stopping smoking, eating healthily and telling your GP about any symptoms that are unusual to you such as a persistent cough or breathlessness.
Question and answers About the lung health check Who will be invited for a lung health check? Lung health checks are being offered to people aged from 55 to 74 who smoke or used to smoke and who are registered with a Southampton GP. You will be invited even if you feel fit and healthy and if you currently have no lung problems, or if you currently have a lung condition. Where will the lung health check take place? The lung health check will take place in mobile vans around the city. The lung health check unit will be located at Royal South Hants from February 2022. If I am eligible, how will I be contacted? You will be sent an invitation letter from your GP. If you have been invited and require the invite in a different format, please contact the team. If you have received an invitation letter and would like to book your lung health check, contact the team on 02381 20883.
Question and answers About the lung health check What happens during the lung health check? You will meet a specially trained lung health check nurse at your appointment, which can be carried out via telephone, video call or face-to-face. Your lung health check will take approximately 30 minutes and during this time: The nurse will ask you some questions about your breathing and your overall lung health. They will ask you about your lifestyle, family and medical history. The nurse may talk to you about having a lung scan in our mobile unit.
Question and answers About the lung health check Can I bring a friend, family member, partner or carer? Carers and support workers can attend the LHC appointment. Are the lung health checks accessible for all? Yes. If you require any special assistance when coming for your lung health check, or would like the results letter in a different format, please let the team know when booking. I have trouble with mobility, who should I tell? Please contact the TLHC team on 02381 208883. Am I able to arrange an interpreter for the appointment? Yes, please contact the TLHC team on 02381 8883 to inform them that you require an interpreter. I meet the criteria but have not been contacted The invites will not be sent out in one go so your letter may be on the way. Batches will be sent according to where your GP is located. We will write to you and your GP so they know you had the appointment. You and your GP will also receive a copy of the results of the lung health check. If you require further tests or any further treatment, you will be contacted.

What if I do not meet the criteria, can I still have a Lung Health Check? At present lung health checks are being offered to 55 -74 year old smokers or former smokers in Southampton. If you aren t eligible for a lung health check, it is still really important to look after your lungs by being active, stopping smoking, eating healthily and telling your GP about any of the following symptoms that are unusual to you, such as: a persistent cough or change in your normal cough coughing up blood being short of breath unexplained tiredness or weight loss an ache or pain when breathing or coughing appetite loss.

Everyone aged from 55 74 who is registered at a Southampton GP practice and has ever smoked, will be invited for a lung health check. This is based on GP records. Those eligible will receive a letter inviting them to book a lung health check. Who is providing the lung health check service and where will these take place? The service is being provided by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and the checks are carried out by specially trained lung health check nurses. Lung health checks will take place in mobile vans around the city which have a support vehicle and mobile CT scanner. Results The patients GP will receive a copy of the lung health check results, which will include any follow up treatment needed. How can I contact the team? You can contact the team on 02381 208883.

The scheme has been designed to minimise GP workload and is being carried out by a specialist lung health check team. Letters will be drafted on GP practice letterheads, but these will be sent out by the lung health checks team.
