Development of 650 MHz RF Power Systems for PIP-II Linac
The project involves designing and fabricating 325 MHz and 650 MHz RF power systems for PIP-II Linac. Various milestones, including the development of 40 kW RF systems, testing prototypes, and collaboration between RRCAT and Fermilab, are outlined. The high-level goal is to achieve specific power levels for RF amplifiers per cavity. Additionally, a 30 kW 650 MHz RF power prototype was successfully developed and tested. The ultimate aim is to enhance the RF capabilities for research purposes.

High Level Goal The PIP-II Linac will have one RF Amplifier per cavity. The power level for 650 MHz Solid State Amplifier are 40 kW (LB650) and 70 kW (HB650). RRCAT in collaboration with Fermilab is building a 2-cavity, 650 MHz Horizontal Test Stand. Four 650 MHz 40 kW RF Power Source are required for two numbers of HTS-2 Fermilab is building a HB650 Cryomodule for testing Cryomodule Test Facility (2018) as part of the PIP-II R&D program. Six 650 MHz 40 kW RF Power sources are required for this test. Lad & Pasquinellie | 650 MHz RF Power 9/15/2024

30 kW 650 MHz RF Power Prototype 30 kW 650 MHz RF amplifier system was developed as per old FRS, it was tested at RRCAT with dummy load. 15 kW unit is housed in a single euro rack with 40 nos. of 500 watts RF amplifier modules with DC power supplies ,control & interlock unit. 40 way RF power combiner is used to get combined output RF power. 30 kW CW RF power is obtained by combining RF powers of two 15 kW amplifier racks with the help of a two way combiner 30 kW, 650 MHz Solid State RF Amplifier 6 6 Lad & Ralph | 650 MHz RF power

Progress Design Changes from 30 kW to 40 kW Power in 650 MHz RF Power In order to incorporate functional requirement and to control two units in master-slave made, major changes were done by incorporating microcontroller based control boards in new 40kW SSRFA. Euro rack design was completely reviewed to accommodate 48 PA modules and also 48 SMPS, as compared to earlier design using 32 modules. Water circuit was also modified. Compact design was explored in order to accommodate 48+2=50 PA modules in a euro rack compared to 32 PA modules, used in 15kW unit of 30 kW SSRFA Compact 48 port design explored in order to get 20 kW power from a single rack instead of using three 15 kW units Distributed Embedded data acquisition Power divider and combiner Enclosure for 20 kW unit 500W PA Modules Lad & Ralph | 650 MHz RF power 11 July 2016 8

Status: Design of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System DAE Notes: A draft TRS for 40 kW, 650 MHz RF power system has been jointly prepared and sent by DAE SPC to Fermilab SPC on June 16, 2016 for review. Fermilab Response This document has been reviewed by the Fermilab SPM and the commented version has been uploaded to Fermipoint on July 1,2016 for review by RRCAT. Fermilab has requested that the TRS for the 650 MHz 40 kW amplifier be identical to that for the 325 MHz amplifier. This is required to keep a common interface for both RF Systems with LLRF, RFPI, Controls etc. Lad & Pasquinellie | 650 MHz RF Power 9/15/2024
Schedule & Others: Design of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System DAE Notes: Design of 40kW, 650 MHz RF System (scheduled on Dec 2015 as per Joint Project document) will get initiated once the TRS from RRCAT is finalized. The combined web meetings, do not provide opportunity to address the detail technical issues related with 650 MHz RF power system. Focused meetings between SPCs for 650 MHz RF Power should take place. Fermilab Response: RRCAT will review the TRS and after one or two more iterations, approval should be done by September 1 2016. The Wednesday meeting agendas are under control of the Fermilab SPM and DAE-SPC. Please send your agenda items to IIFC-RF Power Meeting Coordinator at Fermilab. Fabrication of 650 MHz RF Power Systems Milestone Major Milestone Quantity Delivery date 2 (a) Fabrication and testing of 2 nos. of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System for HTS-2 for Fermilab and 2 nos. for HTS-2 for DAE laboratories. 4 30 June 2017 (c) Fabrication of 6,40 kW 650 MHz RF System for CMTF being fabricated by DAE laboratories for Fermilab. 6 31 Jan 2018 Lad & Ralph | 650 MHz RF power 11 July 2016 12
Schedule & Others : Fabrication of 650 MHz RF Power Systems DAE Notes: Work on milestone 7.1-2(a) Fabrication and testing of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System (4 nos.) for HTS-2 will be initiated after completion of milestone 7.1-1(d) Design of 40 kW 650 MHz RF System (Time T0).It will be completed 18 months after T0. Work on milestone 7.1-2(c) Fabrication and testing of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System (6 nos.) for CMTF will be completed (18+7) months after T0. Fermilab Response: Considering that RRCAT has already made significant progress on this project ,a mutually agreed schedule date for delivery must be established Fermilab due to its programmatic requirements would like DAE to meet this schedule. It is essential that a prototype be delivered to Fermilab for testing and integration well before production begins. DAE Notes: Fermilab has requested to increase the quantity of deliverable under the milestone 7.1-2 (c) Fabrication and testing of 40 kW, 650 MHz RF System for CMTF from 6 to 7 nos. Fermilab Response: One additional unit is required for a spare unit for the accelerator. Lad & Pasquinellie | 650 MHz RF Power 9/15/2024
