  2. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: recognise the idea of reported verbs. use reported verbs properly.

  3. Reporting Verbs: In reported speech, we focus on how to change : direct speech ("I love coffee.") into : reported speech (Mariam said that she loved coffee.), using the verbs 'say', 'tell' and 'ask'. However, we can also use many other verbs to report what someone said, like 'promise', 'warn', 'advise , 'recommend , etc. Infinitive with to Object + Infinitive with to advise, invite, warn, tell, encourage, persuade -ing from admit, regret, consider, deny, all verbs followed by a preposition, e.g. insist on, apologise for. Offer, refuse, agree, promise Ministry of Education-2020

  4. verb + to + infinitive: OFFER v infinitive to We offered to drop them home. PROMISE v infinitive to He promised to arrive early. Ministry of Education-2020

  5. object + infinitive with to: ADVISE(is to give someone advice. Notice the different spelling for the verb and the noun.) object to infinitive She advised him to see a doctor. INVITE to infinitive object We invited them to come to the party. Ministry of Education-2020

  6. -ing form: - verb + -ing form CONSIDER v -ing She consideredcalling the manager. DENY v -ing He deniedbreaking the window with his ball. Ministry of Education-2020

  7. -ing form: - verb + preposition + -ing form TALK ABOUT preposition v -ing I talked aboutparticipating in the race. AGREE ON v preposition -ing She agreed oncooking dinner for us. Ministry of Education-2020

  8. Report the bold parts of the sentences, using the reported verbs in the box. One is done for you. offer promise invite consider deny Check your answers 1- I haven t seen you in a while. How about you come to my house for dinner? . ___He invited us to come to his house for dinner._____________________________ 2- I will pay more attention next time I am driving. I was about to have an accident. ___________________________________________________________________________ She promised to pay more attention next time she is driving. 3- I can drive you back home. You are on my way. ___________________________________________________________________________ She offered to drive me back home. 4- If I don t find the dress, I might order it online . ___________________________________________________________________________ She considered ordering the dress online. 5- I didn t take the candy.
