Gender Discussion Questions Gender Discussion Questions How do we know what gender(s) we are? How do we know what other people s genders are? How do we know what other people s sexual orientations are?

Sex Assigned at Birth Sex Assigned at Birth What did the doctor say when you were born? The announcement by doctors (EXAMPLE: It s a boy/girl! ) based on what the physical anatomy looks like Sex assigned at birth is determined by a combination of anatomy, hormones, and chromosomes.

Gender Identity Gender Identity How do you feel inside? Your internal sense of being male, female, neither, both, multi, all, or another gender(s). Everyone has a gender identity.

Gender Expression Gender Expression How do people perceive you? The intentional and unintentional ways we outwardly share our gender to other people, including hair, clothes, make-up (or no make-up), the name we call ourselves, mannerisms, speech, voice, pronouns we use, our interests, and who we hang out with Gender expression is interpreted by other people, who then assign us gender roles that may not always match how we present ourselves or how we identify.

Attraction Attraction Who are you attracted to? We can be attracted to people romantically, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Attraction is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to gender identity, gender expression/presentations, and sex assigned at birth. What is usually understood as sexual orientation refers to 1) our own gender(s) and 2) the gender(s) of the people we are attracted to.

Gender Unicorn Activity Gender Unicorn Activity Take a few minutes to think about and map your own identities using the Gender Unicorn. Share your map with a partner or small group if you are comfortable doing so. Example: 1. My own gender is X. 2. I express my gender with some masculinity and some femininity; I like to perform my gender by X. 3. When I was born, the doctors assigned me X. 4. I am attracted (sexually, emotionally) to X and X.
