Using Quotes in an Essay The author s words WORD FOR WORD go in quotes. The page number needs to be after the quotes
Embedding a Quote Sometimes called a Half-n-Half Many high school students would agree that school uniforms can be detrimental to a student s self- esteem and a hindrance to their creativity (48). Which part belongs to the student? Which part belongs to the author?
Despite the many criticisms, uniforms offer comfort and continuity and allow students to feel as if they fit in with their peers (75).
What to do and what not to do The following quote is from S.L. Rottman sHero. It s the things you do in life, not the things you see. Page 80 Said by: Mr. Hassler There are two things wrong with this. Can you find them? Here s what I CAN T do: It s a floating quote it s just stuck in there. And there s no . . . What? Mr. Hassler gave Sean a lot of good advice. It s the things you do in life, not the things you see.
So . . . How do I make that work? It s the things you do in life, not the things you see. Page 80 Quote Intro Said by: Mr. Hassler One of the many lessons Sean learned from Mr. Hassler was that it s the things you do in life, not the things you see (90).
How would you work in this quote? Page 90 Mr. Hassler I m your parent while you re on my ranch Here s one idea: Quote Intro Mr. Hassler went above and beyond the call of duty when he told Sean, I m your parent while you re on my ranch (90).
Sometimes a quote needs to be tweaked Page 90 Sean I looked at him. I didn t know what to say. He wasn t required to take care of me; he had volunteered to do it. He could have kicked me out whenever he wanted to. Which word/s would you change? Sean changed his opinion of his situation when he realized that Mr. Hassler wasn t required to take care of me; he had volunteered to do it (90). Does this work? Why or why not?

Rottman didn t write it this way and if we put it in quote marks, it means this is WORD FOR WORD. that Mr. Hassler wasn t required to take care of [him]; he had volunteered to do it (90) Sean changed his opinion of his situation when he realized But here s what we CAN do . . .
If you put words in brackets its important that they MEAN THE SAME THING as the words you re replacing. THIS IS VERY, VERY important! Good example: Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight, but he didn t do too much to help his daughter get started in the business (37). Angelina is a successful actress on her own steam. Even though acting is a family business, [father Jon Voight]didn t do much to help his daughter get started in the business (37).
EEEEEEVIL example: Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight, but he didn t do too much to help his daughter get started in the business (37).
