  2. Who is conducting research? NKU s Public History Department Master s level program Under direction of Dr. Tenkotte

  3. What has been done? Students have studied various key places in Newport s West Side Research has been consolidated to create a written history of the area

  4. Why? To preserve and bring awareness to the West Side s rich history While the East Side s history is relatively visible, the History Department is working to bring more focus to the West Side s equally important past

  5. What weve learned . . . Newport was established in 1795, named after Admiral Christopher Newport, one of the founding settler of Jamestown. Established in 1803, Newport s military post was heavily active for both the North and the South during the civil war.

  6. What weve learned (contd.) From the 1920s-80s, Newport was most known for its gambling scene, even earning the name Sin City, Kentucky . After much public outcry, efforts to clean up the city closed down most night clubs and casinos, but the reforms lead to increased poverty in the marginalized sections of society that depended on the night life for income. The remains of this effect can be traced to as one of the root causes for tract 505s economic struggle.
