Explore the effect of mass on the time it takes for cupcake cases to fall to the ground by conducting a series of experiments, calculating average fall times, measuring heights, and analyzing the forces acting on falling objects. Understand why time decreases as mass increases and delve into concepts like terminal velocity and forces affecting falling objects.

  1. Cupcake Cases Experiment What happens when I drop more than 1 cupcake case at a time? 1. You will need: A Stopwatch, a tape measure, cupcake cases, a family member. 2. Take one cupcake case and hold it above the ground. Either at the top of the stairs or by standing carefully on a chair or a stepladder. 3. Hold one cupcake case above the ground. As you let go, get your family member to start the stopwatch. 4. When the cupcake case hits the ground, stop the stopwatch and record the time it takes for the cupcake case to fall to the ground. 5. Now place another cupcake case inside the first and repeat the experiment again. 6. Continue to add more cupcake cases and repeat the experiment.

  2. Number of Cupcake Cases Time Taken to drop (s)

  3. Number of Cupcake Cases Time Taken to fall (s) Trial 1 Time Taken to fall (s) Trial 2 Time Taken to fall (s) Trial 3 Average Time Taken to fall (s)

  4. Extension Work Repeat each cupcake case drop another 2 times. Can you now calculate the average time taken to drop. Measure the height of your drop and work out the speed of each cup cake case falling by using the equation: Speed = Distance Time Draw a graph of your results. ( A line graph would be best) Write a brief conclusion to explain what you found out. You might want to research the effect of forces on falling objects. Why did the time taken for the cupcake cases to fall, decrease as the mass increased? What forces act on an object when it falls? What is terminal velocity?
