Promoting System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Togo to Enhance Food Security
This initiative led by Peace Corps Togo aims to address food security challenges in Togo by promoting the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) from September 2012 to July 2014. With a focus on enhancing the capacity of rice farmers and tackling constraints in rice production, the project targets improving rice productivity and financial outcomes for rural populations. By introducing SRI technology and strategic interventions, the project seeks to reduce dependence on imported rice and boost national rice paddy production to meet local demands.

The Problem Food Security Challenge Dependence of imported rice National Rice Paddy Production : 121,295 tons (2010 estimation by the Department of Information Statistics and documentation from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries) Coverage of Needs: 35% of the national demand Importation : 65 % of national needs Low productivity on Rice farms and households Low revenue among rural populations 216,842 households produce rice
Objectives General Objective To contribute to the improvement of food security and the revenue of rice producers Specific Objective Reinforce the capacity of rice farmer from the large rice producing regions of Togo(des foyers de diss mination) Strategic Intervention: Training of Trainers at the national and regional level (West Africa) MRE workshops at the regional level Household Exchange visits
The Constraints of Producing Rice in Togo Difficulty of Developing Plots Water Management Problems: Irrigation : amount of water and drainage Fertilization: costs et quantity of fertilizers Diseases Mechanization Yields and high production costs: non-competitive Climate Change: Flood, Drought, Soil Degradation.

Definition : What is SRI? SRI is a combination of soil, water, plants, and light elements in a way which allows the plant to express it s production potential hidden by poor practices. Plant It produces a crop which uses a soil which in organic matter and well ventilated and reduces the amount of seed, water, and fertilizer. Light Water Soil

Without flooding Flood : 15- 40 cm Weeding and Hoeing 6 Weed/Hoe Tool Hoe away
Activities : Training of Volunteers and Counterparts in Benin Visit Location: next to the point of water and field Dimension: 100m2/ha soit 10mx10m Parcelle mara ch re Light soil with 15cm depth and good tilth. Weighing and Winnowing Soaking 24h in water Seeds that float are discarded Quantitie 8 Kg/ha SRI 50-60Kg/ha current practice Peppinier duration 10-15 days # 21-30 days for current practice
