Section Status in June 2011 Chair and Vice-Chair relocated away from the region Two meetings in over a year Membership participation extremely low Active members dwindled to ~52 No official budgets for over 3 years Synergy between local section and the Society all time low No outreach programs in place

Revitalization Phase 1: 2011 2012 FY Vision: Let s work to stress the Basics Technical Programs Target growth in active membership Interact with local university Student Chapter (RPI) Improve communication with the Society Revamp the Executive Committee (governance) Metrics for performance Goals for EOY Membership sentiment (surveys, word of mouth, participation, etc )

Phase 1: Technical Programs First focus was to rebuild the Technical Program series Step one to adding Value to the membership Appointed Three Program co-chairs Reduces the burden of hosting Add variety to topics (nuclear, mechanical, material science, non-technical ) Co-host events with other professional organizations (e.g. ASM, HPS, ASME) Builds synergy, relations, share the cost Bribe with food (e.g. snacks, sandwiches, pizza, etc ) Targets the young members in the audience Rotate between multiple locations for ease of access Public libraries, university hall, restaurants

Phase 1: Growth in Membership Build a case for membership value to retain and re-attract current member base Surveys for feedback to the leadership Utilize experienced members as career mentors Targeted the young engineers Presentations at work staff meetings Word of mouth at external social hours Solicit ideas for technical seminars

Phase 1: Interaction with RPI Student Chapter Improved relationship with local university student section was a high priority: Networking between the Professionals and Students Accomplished by: Hosting multiple events on RPI campus (easier access to students) Interaction with faculty members for better integration Access for students to utilize career mentors Pave a road for students to gain access for employment opportunities and for employees to locate quality students locally (e.g. KAPL, GE, etc ) Provide easier access for our members to university Faculty and Resources for collaborations Sponsoring RPI student events Hosting social hour RPI President sits and holds a vote on NENY-ANS Executive Committee

Phase 1: Governance Revamp Before: After (effective July 2012): 17 voting members on the EC 9 voting members on the EC Including RPI SC President Chair Advisor (elected) EC meetings held ever 2-3 months Rarely all members showed 3 non-voting members on EC Leadership void created a nightmare for transition Monthly meetings with organized agenda and Action Items Not many clearly defined roles

  12. Revitalization Phase 2: 2012 2013 FY Strengthen the Bases and Expand the structure Reinitiate Outreach Committee Reinitiate a permenanent Honors & Awards Committee Further build value to the Membership

Phase 2: Outreach Committee Developed educational and community outreach efforts Inaugural NENY-ANS Essay Contest 6 submissions Membership presence at local science fairs Volunteers and judges Volunteering opportunities in community Co-leading efforts with KAPL to design a science exhibit at local museum

  14. Phase 2: Honors & Awards Committee Purpose: Recognize and reward members who have dedicated significant time and resources to serve the Society s and local section s mission Promoting nuclear science, engineering, & technology Nominated Dr. Thomas M. Sutton for ANS Fellow Awards created: Distinguished Service Award: long-term dedication Member of the Year Award: short-term dedication Presidential Citation: special recognition for one FY

Phase 2: Adding Value to Membership Initiated Newsletter program: Nor easter (quarterly) Hosted 11 Technical Seminars Hosted Membership Drive and Spring Banquet Guest speaker: NY State Supreme Court Justice Hosted Social Hour in conjunction with RPI SC Membership gift for renewing and new members Active two-way feedback system (Chair Advisor)

Phase 2: Streamline Governance Treat the Organization as a business Budget, monthly reports, proper accountability Build a trusted network of officers for all committees Freedom with the responsibility; however build accountability Engaged the experienced members for improvements (through Chair Advisor)
