  2. George Thomas Harrell (1908- 1999) Professor of medical research 1st Dean - University of Florida COM 1956 Established a College of Medicine and Nursing Emphasized training doctors to understand and care for the whole patient Advocated for teaching students in small groups

  3. UF History 1866 East Florida Seminary per Governor Brown, opens in Gainesville 1903 Named University of Florida 1924 Became co-educational 1940 s Wilmont gardens and ACS due to Wilmont 1950 s Dr. Harrell worked with Dr. J Hillis Miller to plan integrated health center Senator Shands lobbied for teaching Hospital in Gainesville (renamed in 1965) 1956 Opened COM and Nursing, and brought Pharmacy, Public Health, Health Professions, Nursing and Health library to medical campus

Harold Hume UF 1904 Hume eventually left Florida Agricultural College to work at the North Carolina Research Station and then at northern Florida s Glen St. Mary Nurseries Company, a business focused on growing citrus trees. Came back to UF 1930 study fruit flies Interim president 1947 Composed, dedicated, leader Provost 1949 Affectionately known as the Grand Old Man of Agriculture,

  5. Hired 1904 Campus Lake City - Horticulturalist

  6. Camellia History - ?? Originated in Orient Japan and China > 20,000 named varieties The Camellia was named by Linnaeus in honor of a Jesuit priest serving in the Philippines - Joseph Kamel. Most popular camellia camellia sinesnsis (1700 BC) 1650 - East India company brought it from China to Europe So you might say that a camellia was the origin of the Revolution which created the United States as a separate country from Great Britain.

  7. Wilmot was a founding member of the American Camellia Society, which was established on the University of Florida campus in 1946. Met and Worked with Hume He edited the society s yearbook through 1949 and died in 1950 at the age of 52. Hume was devastated. In his memory, friends and colleagues from the United States and abroad donated over 300 rare varieties of camellias to establish the gardens bearing his name. A monument to Wilmot Botanical Gardens was unveiled in the center of the gardens in 1954.
