Realities of Being A (STEM) Student of Color Dr. Nancy Woods & Mary Darrow Week 3
Opener Research the idea of intersectionality coined by Dr. Kimberl Crenshaw. Find a picture of a floral bouquet that you like or you can be creative and draw your own. Use the floral bouquet as a graphic to describe your unique intersectionalities. Print a copy of your completed Intersectionality Bouquet and bring it to the Week 3 Community Building session.
Community Introductions Using your Intersectionality Bouquet, please introduce yourself to the community.
Discussion Prompts What is your conceptual understanding of intersectionality? What societal barriers exist as a result of your intersecting identities?

How have you leveraged the positive experiences? What support from your institution and department would help improve your reality/experience as a student of color?

Assignment (Due, Monday, June 28, 2021 at 1:00pm) Think about your VSEER experience thus far. Write a journal reflection addressing: What you learned about the VSEER culture. What adjustments did you have to make to be successful? What were some struggles you experienced? What character traits helped you to overcome the struggle(s). In what ways did your cultural heritage and community help you cope with the challenges you faced? What was your biggest accomplishment? How did your cultural heritage and the communities (peer, faculty, family, etc.) around you contribute to your accomplishments?
