  5. Responsive Services Definition Services which are available to meet the special or unexpected needs of students and parents/guardians. These services support students in overcoming barriers to social/emotional, academic and career development.

  12. Graduated Intervention Formal School Counseling Referral Pre-Referral Strategy Evaluation Pre-Referral Strategies *Crisis Situations (e.g. suicide, self-harm, abuse) require immediate response; contact the school counselor immediately.

  13. Pre-Referral Strategies Parent/Guardian Contact Student/Teacher Conference Home-based strategies, ex. study time or place Classroom strategies, ex. behavior plan or tutoring

  14. Pre-Referral Strategy Evaluation Are current strategies working? Should current strategies be adjusted? Should formal referral to school counselor for individual or small group counseling be made?

After a Referral The school counselor, in collaboration with teachers and/or parents/guardians, develops an action plan that may include: Parent/Guardian Support Group Counseling Individual Counseling Mandated Reporting School Nurse Referral Outside Agency Referral Special Services Referral Administrator Referral Other Counselor should follow-up with the referring person while maintaining student/family privacy & confidentiality

  20. Confidentiality SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE BOUND BY THE ASCA ETHICAL STANDARDS Information is to be kept confidential unless: Disclosure is necessary to prevent clear and imminent danger OR Legal requirements demand information to be revealed (Example: subpoena) The Counseling Referral Form is an educational record and subject to FERPA

  21. Consultation & Collaboration Teachers School Counselors Parents Students Administrators Helping Professionals To Empower Those Involved to Assist Students

  22. Emergency Intervention No formal referral is needed. Student safety is essential Parents, faculty or staff are directed and guided to immediate responsive services. Outside referral may be warranted.

  23. Levels of Intervention LEVEL 1: PREVENTION LEVEL 2: SHORT-TERM INTERVENTION LEVEL 3: EXTENDED INTERVENTION LEVEL 4: OUTSIDE REFERRAL

  24. Responsive Services Materials These materials provide sample session and unit plans for implementation of small group counseling at all grade levels. These materials may be found on the DESE website under Responsive Services.

  25. School-Wide Crisis Plan for School Counselors This provides a survival guide for school counselors in the process of planning for school-wide crises, critical incidents, and emergency management plans. You may find more Crisis Materials on the DESE website under Responsive Services.
