2. What is Setting? A setting (or backdrop) is the time and geographic location within a narrative, either nonfiction or fiction. It is a literary element. The setting initiates the main backdrop and mood for a story. Setting also includes element like weather and specific places.

3. How to Identify Setting Step One: Step Two: Start by looking for the obvious; see if the narrator tells you where they are or what time it is. Look for sensory details that help support setting; What does the narrator see, hear, smell, touch, and taste that can help you discover where/when they are? Ex. Harry Potter tells you he goes to Diagon Alley when he goes shopping for school supplies.

4. Sensory Details EXAMPLE ONE: A NARRATOR MIGHT SAY THE ICE CRUNCHED BENEATH MY FEET . THE NARRATOR S FEELING AND HEARING THE ICE BENEATH HIS FEET WHICH TELLS US THAT THIS STORY TAKES PLACE SOMEWHERE COLD EXAMPLE TWO: A NARRATOR MIGHT SAY I TASTED THE CARAMEL APPLE AS WE WALKED . TYPICALLY CARAMEL APPLES ARE A SEASONAL TREAT THAT ARE AVAILABLE DURING THE FALL. SO, WE CAN INFER THE STORY TAKES PLACE DURING THE FALL. EXAMPLE THREE: A NARRATOR MIGHT SAY I SAW THE BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME LIGHT UP IN THE DISTANCE . THE HALL OF FAME IS SPECIFICALLY IN SPRINGFIELD SO WE KNOW THE STORY TAKES PLACE HERE. WE ALSO KNOW IT LIGHTS UP AT NIGHT SO THE STORY TAKES PLACE AT NIGHT
