About Me: Dream BIG! Originally from a small town in Mississippi. Played store and marketing as a kid; had my own candy business. I come from family of a generation of farmers and fisherman who sold their products (e.g. corn, green beans, tomatoes, onions, etc., jams/jelly s, pies, and fish) to neighbors in the community and possibly local stores. My dad was a Marine, so I grew up in North Carolina for a little while before moving to Minnesota. While I was creating service learning trips in college and an exchange study at Clark Atlanta University I met friends from South Carolina (e.g. I know of Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, and Irmo). Continuing education at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia University New York, University of Cape Town South Africa, IE Business School Madrid Spain, and University of Virginia Darden School of Business to expand my skills, business, and gain more clients. Will have a doctorate degree between December 2019 and March 30, 2019; I pursued the degree to learn skills needed to expand my firms. Own a conglomerate corporation which has a (1) Public Relations subsidiary and (2) Advertising and Marketing subsidiary; I lead and am legally responsible for the entire company (president), hire applicants (ceo), and select which companies we work with, globally (ceo); I love my job because it aligns with my skills and career interests. About Me: Dream BIG! I started my career in fashion, restaurant, hospitality, retail, and financial services. EXPRESS, Edina Minnesota The Good Earth Health Foods Restaurant (e.g. I made healthy sandwiches, salads, smoothies, fresh squeezed juices, and deserts for customers and worked the cash register), Staybridge Suites Hotels, JCPenney Women s Department Supervisor, Wells Fargo Bank, US Bank, SunTrust Banks, Inc., and then MEDICA Health Plans. Fun fact: There is a Wells Fargo Bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) on the North Pole and the locals operate the machine. What I learned at each job became the catalyst for the industries my companies service with advertising and marketing, analytics, and so forth projects. Career Profiles Reliability & Significance Key Question: How significant and reliable are the career profile assessments? My experience with career assessments and profiles is they are highly reliable! I combined my assessments over the years into one Excel spreadsheet to make comparisons , see my results inside of one document, and create new capabilities for my companies to make more money, with new clients I did not realize I could work with before. Skills and information from your assessments can go into your cover letter to a potential employer. Age and career level are irrelevant; whenever I encounter a company interested in working with me on a project, who wants to hire me to help them grow their company, or is a university looking for a business instructor, they ask for my skills, cover letter, professional papers and presentations from my portfolio, and an email inquiry. Other Things to Consider Take projects and papers written in school and internships seriously to have a portfolio of information to share with recruiters, in conjunction with knowing your career profile information. Upload works from your portfolio into Dropbox, Google drive, or some other Cloud Platform to send a link to employers instead of a large file; or you can still attach files to an email inquiry with your cover letter attached. Most communication is completed via email and online platforms; design schools rarely hold open houses anymore where students show design or marketing portfolios in person. Copy of My Assessments Career profile and assessments did not exist when I was in high school over 20 years ago, so I completed my first profile 8 years ago, and again every few years after to ensure I was on track, to follow my dreams. A variety of career personality profiles and assessments exist. Destiny School at a local nonprofit Results: I will not link the results here because the assessment was 125 questions with detailed descriptions. Yet, questions asked were about my behaviors, whether I am in introvert or extrovert, how I lead, if I like inspiring, giving to, and helping other people, if I like administration and organizing things, what I am passionate about, people or groups I feel the most desire to help, etc. University of Phoenix assessment completed at a career fair and workshop I held when I was board president in the Memphis region; I decided to take the assessment myself (https://www.phoenix.edu/career-services/explorer.html) Results: University of Phoenix Career Assessment Results Career and skills assessment from BoardSpan (www.BoardSpan.com) Results: BoardSpan Assessment Results Career assessments can help with a variety of things, like knowing which degree program, major, and minors to choose for college, which jobs to apply for to have a better chance of getting hired, or if you want to start a business someday, to know what skills you have to turn into services to offer to customers. Career Focus Key Question: Why should students focus on careers now? To begin thinking about action steps to BE what you said what you want to be when you grow up. Your likes and what you played as a child will also give hints to or explain your career interests. To start thinking about how you plan to take care of/support yourself financially in the future, a family if you planned to have one, and to contribute to society. To determine which degree program you will pursue in college. Begin researching what marketing jobs, internships, degree programs, and opportunities are in the state you plan to attend college; if an offline college does not have the career/degree program you are interested in or that aligns with your career profile and assessment, consider attending an online college that has your program. At work I see where marketing professionals are needed at: Multinational and global businesses (Can someone tell me the name of a multinational/global company?) Television networks / entertainment companies Warner Bros. Entertainment & Marketing (Game Design Professionals Wanted) Furniture, bedding, fragrance, and accessories companies and stores; see StyleCareers.com Food & Beverage companies / Consulting firms that perform analytics, advertising, marketing, and graphic design for clients Colleges & universities (website design and marketing plans) / Full-service advertising and marketing agencies (BBDO, Dentsu, TBWA, Hill Holiday) Hospitals, architectural firms, film companies, insurance companies like Liberty Mutual, banks, automotive companies, fast food restaurant chains, retail department stores, and in politics for politicians, political campaigns CAREER PERSONALITY PROFILES - MARKETING 8
Newer Marketing Niche Positions Key Question: What are newer marketing niche positions? Sports marketing and social media marketing? Marketing Lead for IBM University Relations Department Digital Marketing Positions does not just mean you think about social media, but some shoe (Shoes.com), grocery delivery (InstaCart.com), and financial (Ally.com Bank) (ChimeBank.com) businesses are only online now Influencer Marketing Associate Social Media Influencer Rakuten Affiliate Marketing Influencer and affiliate positions and programs I usually see in the industry are at companies like Blue Apron, Green Chef, Estee Lauder, Nike, Macy s, NatureBox, Bloomingdale s, and so on. Influencing marketing revolvers around working with influencers who are on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook mostly that align with the brand, business lines, or companies products; negotiate terms and deliverables for them to promote your companies products or niche, develop pitches, secure new partnerships, manage campaigns, and build relationships. The object is to get businesses to buy businesses products or services or to sell products or services to consumers. CAREER PERSONALITY PROFILES - MARKETING 9
