  4. An Inspector Calls: Essay writing skills Priestley presents Gerald as an irresponsible character who believes his affair with Daisy Renton was inevitable after he arranged for her to stay in his friend s flat. The fact Gerald maintains that he didn t install her there so that I could make love to her suggests a complete lack of any sense of responsibility for his actions despite having to admit his affair in front of Sheila. Indeed, Gerald uses the adjective inevitable to deflect the blame from himself, as if he had no choice but to have an affair with her. Priestley uses Gerald to illustrate to the audience how those within the upper class often use their position of power to take advantage of those less fortunate in society.
