What is a clause? A clause is part of a sentence, or a group of words, which has a subject and a verb. In some cases, a clause can form a complete sentence.
Examples: I was standing near a wall. She made tea for the guest. They are singing in a loud voice.
Independent clause/ main clause 1. It can stand alone as a sentence. 2. It has both- a subject and a verb. 3. It forms a complete thought.
Examples of independent/ main clause: 1. I love chocolate. 2. John ran quickly. 3. She hates snow. 4. He eats pasta everyday.
Dependent/ subordinate clause: 1. A subordinate clause does not make sense on its own. 2. It depends on the main clause to form a sentence. 3. In other words, it does not express a complete thought. 4. A subordinate clause usually begins with a conjunction- while, because, when, although etc.
Examples of subordinate/dependent clause: 1. while Bob was sleeping 2. until he would finish 3. because he was late 4. while he was cleaning 5. while the kangaroo crossed the road
Identify the subordinate clause: After John caught the fish, Kelly caught one also.
Answer: After John caught the fish,
Identify the main clause: The prince and his knights rode into the valley because the dragon had burned the village.
Answer: The prince and his knights rode into the valley.
Identify the main clause: If Louise goes to the store, she would be late for the movie.
Answer: She would be late for the movie.
Identify the dependent clause: I like to eat lunch outside when the sun is shining.
Answer: when the sun is shining
Identify the dependent clause: The ball bounced into the hole where Casey and Robert could not reach it.
Answer: where Casey and Robert could not reach it
Identify the independent clause: Since his car broke down, Mr. Eagles rides the bus to work.
Answer: Mr. Eagles rides the bus to work.
Complete to make sense: When he had brushed his teeth When he had brushed his teeth, he went to bed.
Complete to make sense: Although he was sick .
Complete to make sense: until you have finished the milk.
Complete to make sense: Until the sun sets
Complete to make sense: .because he ran.
Complete to make sense: Wherever he might go ..
Exit ticket: Write 2 sentences, circle the main clause and underline the dependent clause.
