Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition in 1804 to explore the Louisiana Territory, west of the Missouri River, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. Their adventure included encounters with the Sioux Indians, reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1805, and the purchase of a Newfoundland dog named Seaman who played a vital role in their journey. Lewis and Clark successfully completed their mission in 1806, marking a significant chapter in American history.

  2. Lewis and Clark The men who explored were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Lewis and Clark s expedition started in May, 1804.They explored West of the Missouri river. The president that sent them was Thomas Jefferson. They went because the U.S. purchased the Louisiana Territory and they had to explore the land. They finished their expedition successfully in 1806!

  4. Lewis Purchases Seaman In 1803 Lewis bought a 150 pound Newfoundland dog at the docks near Camp Wood, on the Ohio River. Lewis bought the dog named Seaman for $20. Seaman was a good dog because Seaman could save a drowning person. He could swim because he had webbed paws. Seaman helped them find food on their trip by hunting squirrels. Seaman was a great help!   5. Meeting the Sioux In September of 1804 Lewis and Clark met the Sioux Indians. They were in the Louisiana Territory. The Sioux thought Seamen was a bear, then hey figured out he was a Bear-Dog. Next, they wanted to trade three beaver skins for Seamen. They also traded gift s with each other. This was important for Lewis and Clarks journey because it showed how much they loved Seamen.   6. Arriving at The Pacific Ocean They arrived at the Pacific Ocean on, November 12, 1805. This took place at the Pacific Ocean. They arrived safely to the Pacific Ocean and completed the mission successfully. This was important to their journey because they finished! To Map
