Weather and Climate Information Dissemination in Rwanda During Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the traditional dissemination of weather and climate information in Rwanda, leading to the adoption of virtual methods for awareness campaigns and forecasts. Various government bodies collaborated to ensure the public was informed and prepared for extreme weather events. Meteo Rwanda played a vital role in providing timely updates and forecasts through radio, TV, and online platforms during the October to December 2020 period.

KEY THINGS TO NOTE The Covid-19 affected the face to face dissemination of weather and climate information thus we had to go virtually and find other means to disseminate weather and climate information The City of Kigali, Ministry in charge of Emergency Management and Meteo Rwanda jointly conducted awareness campaigns via Radio and TV ahead of rainfall season to enhance preparedness and reduce impacts from extreme weather events. OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2020 Meteo Rwanda consulted Ministry in Charge of Agriculture and Animal Resources and Rwanda Water Resources Board on different occasions to discuss SOND 2020 Forecast. The MINAGRI provided advisories for citizens in the seasonal forecast statement. On 9th September 2020, Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) organized a virtual press conference to disseminate September to December 2020 rainfall seasonal forecast. In total 72 journalists attended On Friday 4th September 2020, the Director General of Meteo Rwanda joined the teleconference organized by the Ministry of Local Goverment whereby he made a presentation on the seasonal forecast. OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2020 CONT Meteo Rwanda was part of National Emergency Command Centre established by the Prime Minister Office and the role of Meteo Rwanda was to provide weather and climate information updates on timely basis. The Kinyarwanda full statement of SOND 2020 rainfall seasonal forecast was aired by Radio Rwanda four times on Friday 11th September 2020 at 17:50 & 20:30 as well as Saturday 12th September 2020 on 12:30 & 15:15. On Thursday 10th September 2020, the Director General of Meteo Rwanda was hosted by Radio Rwanda in Bwakeye Bute Talkshow on September to December 2020 rainfall seasonal forecast from 7:00 to 8:00 am. On Wednesday 23rdSeptember 2020, Mr, Jean Marie Vianney Niyitegeka, Senior Forecaster at Meteo Rwanda was hosted on Rwanda Television from 8:00 to 8:30 in WARAMUTSE RWANDA TALKSHOW. The show focussed on SOND 2020 rainfall seasonal forecast. Saturday, September 14, 2024 4 ICPAC
