The Fusion Science Department Enabling Research Projects for 2021-2023 focus on developing novel fusion-relevant scientific and technological ideas. These projects, led by Principal Investigators, are distinct from main work packages and involve scientific planning, team collaboration, and resource management. The selection process, overseen by the Scientific Board, ensures projects align with scientific excellence, relevance, and innovation. Specific roles and responsibilities are assigned to stakeholders, including Principal Investigators, Project Management Units, Scientific Boards, and Project Boards. The selection of EnR project proposals is based on scientific excellence and Eurofusion's programmatic objectives. Funding has been endorsed for 16 EnR projects, including 5 EnR-MAT projects in various areas such as Additive Manufacturing, NanoDust in Metal Tokamak, and Investigation of defects in diamond materials for fusion diagnostic applications.

  1. FUSION SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Enabling Research Projects 2021-2023(4) Area of Materials Project Board PWI&E Denis Kalupin

  2. Nature of EnR projects EnR projects should be sufficiently distinct from the work to be carried-out in the main WPs including the Theory, Simulation, Verification and Validation (TSVV) tasks linked to the WPs. EnR projects must show novel elements compared to the WP or TSVV tasks (i.e., a new fusion-relevant scientific or technological idea to be tested within ENR, a new method to be developed or taken for the first time into use for fusion). Projects are proposed as packages including: the scientific planning, the team and resources. The selection is done on the basis of scientific excellence, relevance, state-of-the-art and innovation by the dedicated Scientific Board. Scientific Board - Materials Barthe Marie-France (CEA) Del Pilar Fernnadez Parades Maria (CIEMAT) Agostini Pietro (ENEA) Unterberg Bernhard (FZJ) Popov Anatoli (ISSP-UL) Garkusha Igor (KIPT) Diegele Eberhard (KIT) Terentyev Dmitry (LPP-ERM-KMS-01-SCK-CEN) Nordlund Kai (VTT) D. 3. Roles and Responsibilities Stakeholder acronym PI Stakeholder description Details, main role and responsibilities Principal Investigator PIs are responsible for the organization and implementation of activities within their projects, following the recommendation of the Scientific Board and after approval of the General Assembly. PMU Fusion Science Department within EUROfusion PMU The role of the PMU-FSD is to support the formal implementation of ENR activities, to control the use of resources according to the Work Programme and to provide the overall monitoring of project execution SB Scientific Board Materials The role of the Scientific Board is to select EnR project proposals, following the principle of scientific excellence and the EUROfusion programmatic objectives. The SB will ensure continued quality by overseeing the implementation of activities on a regular basis and, if necessary, providing corrections to the project scope. (appointed by the Programme Manager) PB Project Board PWI&E The Project Board supports the PIs in their efforts on the basis of SB-MAT recommendations, approves the revision of resources and annual work programme of WP EnR (Materials area), and resolves possible conflicts between stakeholders. (appointed by the Programme Manager) D. Kalupin | PB PWI&E | 22 June 2021

  4. Selection of EnR project proposals On the 3rdof March 2021, following proposal ranking by Scientific Boards and the recommendation letter by the Programme Manager the General Assembly has endorsed funding for 16 EnR projects distributed over four areas, including 5 EnR-MAT projects: Lead Beneficiary Principal Investigator Title Materials (CfP-FSD-AWP21-ENR-02), project proposal(s): Additive manufacturing as tool to produce and maintain plasma facing components FZJ Daniel Dorow- Gerspach Flavian Stokker Cheregi Sabina Markelj IAP NanoDust in Metal Tokamak (DUST-FORM) JSI Detection of defects and hydrogen by ion beam analysis in channelling mode for fusion UT Aleksandr Lushchik Investigation of defects and disorder in non-irradiated and irradiated Doped Diamond and Related Materials for fusion diagnostic applications (DDRM) Theoretical and Experimental analysis Marcos Moro Electronic interactions of slow ions and their influence on defect formation & sputter yields for plasma facing components VR D. 8. Reporting All ENR project PIs must submit the annual progress reports on achievement of project deliverables (template and submission instructions will be provided by the PMU) and the final report. The reports should be as brief and clear as possible, referring to publications and other information for details. However there should be enough information to support statements that deliverables have been achieved. The SB EnR-TEC will asses the reports and will provide recommendations on the revision of the annual work programme to PB-Tokamak for approval. D. Kalupin | PB PWI&E | 22 June 2021

  9. Communications IMS IMS information (financial) information (financial) management The contractual information for all ENR projects will maintained in https://IMS.euro-fusion.org. management PIs will get access to their project area (implemented under the WP EnR) and must maintain Task and Deliverable description. PMU (in consultation with PIs) will maintain the financial planning of the project in IMS. IMS must be also used to manage all the missions by the project participants. IDM IDM document management document management The contractual documents (e.g. Task Agreement) and reporting is to be done through https://IDM.euro-fusion.org. PIs will get access to the stored documents and the possibility to upload reports. All systems are linked to the EUROfusion Active Directory (AD) and share user credentials, but the access must be authorized separately. D. Kalupin | PB PWI&E | 22 June 2021

  10. Communications WIKI pages WIKI pages project working area project working area All ENR projects will maintain a Wiki page accessible to all EUROfusion members (same as e.g., WPs or TF Wikis) which documents the team, deliverables, scope, meetings, results, links with various WPs, use of experimental data, reports, publications. https://wiki.euro-fusion.org/wiki/WPENR_wikipages:_Enabling_Research_Work_Package INDICO INDICO meetings & presentations meetings & presentations All ENR projects will receive a dedicated space at https://indico.euro-fusion.org/category/212/.These must be used to organise meetings and store meeting materials. Principal Investigators are given the management right to the INDICO category (folder) dedicated to their project. Please note that, any materials uploaded to the EUROfusion INDICO system will remain there for the entire Horizon Europe framework (at least). D. Kalupin | PB PWI&E | 22 June 2021
